Introduction

Winter brings cosy evenings, festive lights, and family gatherings, but also a rise in colds, flu, dry skin, and seasonal stress. For many families, the holidays also mean busy schedules and late nights. At Night Doctor, we believe that prevention is the best medicine, so this winter, let’s focus on staying healthy and safe.

1. Stay Hydrated, Even When It’s Cold

During cold weather, people tend to drink less water, but hydration remains just as important. According to health experts, drinking plenty of water helps keep your immune system strong and supports overall wellness.

Swap frequent hot chocolates or caffeinated drinks with a glass of water or herbal tea, especially if you’re eating rich winter meals.

2. Keep Up Hygiene: Wash Hands & Limit Germ Spread

Winter often brings an increase in colds, flu, and other contagious illnesses, especially when family and friends gather indoors. Experts recommend frequent hand washing (for at least 20 seconds) and regular sanitising of well-used surfaces (door knobs, phones, remotes).

Encourage everyone in the household to wash hands before meals, after coming in from outside, and after contact with commonly used surfaces.

3. Dress Warm, Keep Warm: Prevent Cold-Related Illnesses

Cold weather weakens the immune system and can increase risk of respiratory illness, especially among children and older adults.

Dress in layers, warm socks, hats, scarves, mittens.

4. Stay Active, Even Indoors

While winter cold may discourage outdoor activity, staying active is vital for both physical and mental health. Moderate exercise, even indoor stretching, walking, or light home workouts, helps boost circulation, reduce stress, and support immunity.

Try simple exercises at home if it’s too cold outside, a short walk after meals, a quick stretch before bed, or family dancing to festive music.

5. Prioritise Sleep & Manage Holiday Stress

Holiday lights, social gatherings, late dinners, they can all disrupt sleep and routine. But adequate rest is essential for immune health and stress management. Make sure to:

Winter and the holiday season should be a time of joy, family, and comfort,  not illness or exhaustion. By staying hydrated, maintaining good hygiene, keeping warm, staying active, and getting enough rest, you can help protect yourself and your loved ones this season.

If you need medical advice, or if someone becomes unwell and it’s outside regular GP hours, remember, Night Doctor is here for you, evenings and weekends. Stay safe and have a healthy holiday season.
